Batocera is an operating system designed for emulators, and can be installed in a flash drive. Players can simulate and play up to 75 games on different platforms as long as the flash drive is inserted into any computer. It is very convenient to use. The author will complete the installation and operation from scratch for readers who are not familiar with the Linux operating system and simulator.
A special operating system based on Linux
Linux , like the familiar Windows, is an operating system that can be executed on x86-based PCs (that is, general desktop and notebook computers). Batocera is based on Linux and integrates the Emulation Station preamble (menu system) and RetroArch emulator. Not only does it have as many as 75 emulators for different game consoles, but the menu can also be operated through the game handle, which is very convenient to use.
Batocera has 32-bit and 64-bit PC versions
As well as versions dedicated to single-version computers such as Raspberry Pi and Odroid N2 . The author will use the 64-bit PC version that supports the most emulators as a teaching example. It supports Atari 2600, Famicom (red and white machine), Mega Drive, PC-Engine and other early game consoles, as well as PlayStation, Saturn, N64 mesozoic consoles, and even supports Playstation 2, Playstation Portable, Wii and other consoles. For all supported consoles, please refer to Compatibility list .
In this series of tutorials, the author will explain how to install Batocera on a flash drive, as well as the subsequent startup, settings and operations. Since Batocera's program will take up about 8GB of space, at least a 16GB flash drive should be prepared to accommodate the program, but it is recommended to use a flash drive of 32GB or more with sufficient capacity. In terms of operation, although Batocera supports keyboards and various USB and Bluetooth game controllers, for the convenience of game operation, it is recommended to use Xbox 360 or Xbox One controllers with better compatibility.
The installation and startup process of Batocera is quite simple. Readers need to download the Batocera image file first, and burn it to a flash drive through the Balena Etcher burning tool. If the computer is equipped with an NVIDIA desktop graphics card, it is necessary to modify the batocera-boot.conf configuration file in the Batocera partition of the flash drive, and set
The graphics card driver can be started.
After installation, just enter the BIOS/UEFI setting interface of the computer (usually press the F2 or Del key on the keyboard during the boot process, or refer to the instructions below to enter the setting interface from Windows), turn off the Safe Boot function and Set it to boot from a flash drive. For the detailed operation process, please refer to the graphic description below.
It should be noted that currently Batocera does not support the NVIDIA discrete graphics chip in the notebook computer, but it can still use the built-in graphics chip integrated in the notebook computer processor to operate, so it may cause 3D game performance. .
