The game allows players to raise and care for their own virtual puppy or kitten. Players can choose from a variety of breeds, including Toy Poodles, Chihuahuas, Labrador Retrievers, and Persians. Players can feed, groom, and train their pet, as well as take them out for walks and compete in obedience and agility contests. The game also offers the ability to customize their pet with a variety of accessories and outfits. Additionally, players can interact with other players via the Nintendo 3DS StreetPass and SpotPass features. In Japan, the game is known as ニンテンドッグス＆キャッツトイプードル＆ニューフレンズ (Nintendoggu ando Kyattsu Toi Puudoru ando Nyu Furenzu).
