Players take control of a cast of characters including Diddy Kong, Timber the Tiger, Drumstick the Rooster and Tiptup the Turtle in a race to save their island from the evil Wizpig. The game features four different game modes: Adventure, Battle, Time Trial and Grand Prix. In Adventure, players must complete each race to unlock more tracks and characters.
