Nintendo 64 Modem (Japan) (Add-on) (ニンテンドウ64 モデム) is an add-on device released by Nintendo in Japan in 1999 for their Nintendo 64 console. It enabled the console to connect to the Internet and play online games. The modem was released in two versions, one for the standard Nintendo 64 console and one for the Nintendo 64DD. It was the first console to offer online gaming capabilities, and was the first console to be compatible with the Japan-only online gaming service, Randnet. It was also the first console to offer online voice chat capabilities. The modem connected to the console via the controller port and had a phone jack for connecting to the telephone line. It was compatible with the Nintendo 64's four controller ports, allowing up to four players to play online at the same time. The modem was bundled with a Randnet starter kit, which included a Randnet disk, a Randnet memory card, and a Randnet subscription card. The Randnet service offered online gaming, chat rooms, e-mail, and other online services. The modem was discontinued in 2001 when the Nintendo GameCube was released.
