'Mortal Kombat - Shinken Kourin Densetsu is an action-adventure video game developed and published by Namco Bandai Games for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It is the sequel to the 1993 game Mortal Kombat and the first game in the Shinken Kourin series. The game is a side-scrolling action-RPG with a focus on the fighting game mechanic. It was released on December 4, 1995 in Japan and on October 25, 1996 in the United States. The game is set in the fictional city of Shinken Kourin, which is the location of the game's final boss, Kotal Kahn. Players control either Johnny Cage or Kitana, two of the game's three protagonists, as they battle their way through the city's many enemies, including the Shinken, to reach the city's inner sanctum and face Kahn. The game features a variety of new, more complex fighting techniques, as well as a new story mode. The game was met with critical acclaim, and has been considered one of the greatest video games of all time. It has been awarded several awards, including a Guinness World Record for the most awards given to a video game.
